History of Holiday Automation

Although the idea of holiday automation is relatively new to some, we have been doing it for several years. Below is a brief history of my display and how it has evolved.

2001
X10 modules were added to my Christmas display to enable control of the lights using control software. Using a webpage, I could control the lights using a webpage generated with Misterhouse. No video was involved.

2004
Video was added to the display via JPG image updates and a public website was setup where visitors could control my lights publicly. Misterhouse with X10 modules was used for the display control.

2005
This was the second year providing the ability to control Christmas lights with X10 for public web visitors. Additional lighting added. Control was still provided with X10.

2006
HolidayAutomation.com (aka ChristmasAutomation.com) is launched. My first musically synchronized display is setup for halloween and christmas. Vixen is used to provide light control for web visitors while viewing the display from a low quality JPG video/image feed. The show consists of about 12,000 lights and 70 channels using a DIO card.

2007
The site is given a major upgrade and many features are added including a site locator database, two video streams (for an indoor and outdoor display), and the display was upgraded to 20,000 lights controlled by 192 channels. The video was updated to FLV Video for better performance.
